The Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) is one of the longest-established assessment instruments used to determine the severity of autism spectrum disorder. It assesses the following characteristics: relating to people, imitation, body control, use of objects, adaptation to change, emotional and visual responses, sound, touch, taste, smell and use of these senses, verbal and non-verbal communication, activity level, consistency and level of thinking, and general observation.
